HydroAlumina's technology (The Woodall Process) is a breakthrough innovation that provides safe, inexpensive, room temperature, non-toxic, on-site, on-demand hydrogen production to enable new markets in power generation, commercial heat and power and eventually automotive and consumer applications.
Dr. Woodall's discovery that aluminum, in the presence of a gallium catalyst, can be made to split water to produce very pure hydrogen and recyclable alumina serves as the basis for the Woodall Process.
Disruptive Hydrogen Generation Process
The principle impediment to the adoption of highly efficient Fuel Cells has been the challenge of storaging and transporting hydrogen. Today, most hydrogen is produced by steam methane reforming. While the source material - natural gas - is very cheap, the process is yet another non-renewable, polluting hydrocarbon generator. Vast quantities of carbon dioxide are released by this process. Then the hydrogen has to be purified to fuel standards - 99.99% pure - compressed and shipped in heavy steel cylinders. These heavy cylnders are expensive to transport, difficult to handle and contain only a small amount of hydrogen. By contrast, the Woodall process can produce any quantity of hydrogen, on-site and without any additional power from any grade of locally sourced water - including salt water! There are NO toxic or polluting components in either the fuel or its waste product - aluminum oxide. In fact, the aluminum oxide can be immediately smelted back into aluminum fuel for the Woodall process.
Sample Application Of Woodall Technology
One potential application of the combined-heat-and-power capability of Woodall technology would be to provide all of the electricity as well as space and water heating needs of a typical family home, completely disconnected from power or gas grids. The home reactor would use locally sourced water and a routine shipment of aluminum ingots. A package of ingots 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 4 ft. would provide all of the family's energy needs for a calendar quarter. This installation could even support transportation by providing pressurized hydrogen for a Fuel Cell vehicle. When the aluminum ingots are delivery, the supplier would also remove the reaction residue - aluminum oxide - for reprocessing at a smelter back into fuel ingots. Using clean energy from sources such as hydroelectric, geothermal or solar for the smelter makes the entire energy cycle infinitely reusable.
